Night Time Ski Touring in Tromso, Norway

Submitted by AndreCharland on Tue, 2008-07-22 16:20.

From Riksgransen Christian Bjork and I headed further north and west to the coast of Norway to town called Tromso. The sun never sets there so we took a drive around a couple of small islands and found a nice line for an evening shred above the North Atlantic Ocean.

Tromso is on the edge of Norway and just West of the Lyngen Alps. I highly recommend a trip out there if you like ski touring. The runs, views and access are some of the best I've seen anywhere in the world. Tromso is actually the most Northern city in the world with a population of more than 50,000 and has more skiing than you can do in a life time with an hour or two drive.

North on Ruta 40

Submitted by Les Manley on Sun, 2008-07-20 11:18.

Chos Malal, Argentina - Cerro Walye is flat, thats my story and I'm sticking to it. It has a base elevation of roughly 2200m and peaks rising to over 3000m all around, it is a flat flat place.

Three small surface lifts drag a handful of skiers to an alpine ridge top which spills into ¨la hoyas¨ deep valleys carved into the mountain side. Across a barren landscape lies a large lake dotted with bright yellow grasses. Behind towers 4113m Volcan Tromen, offering 2000m ski runs through a maze of long frozen lava tubes.

Last Days La Grave and Chamonix

Submitted by AndreCharland on Mon, 2008-07-14 22:36.

My last days in the French Alps in 08. Epic conditions skiing with good friends!

I know it's been a few months since I shot this, but figured with all this summer sun we could use some winter stoke! Thanks to Lars, Christian and Mickael aka Boubou! Who's heading south? Send us some updates:)

Heli Drop in Riksgransen

Submitted by AndreCharland on Thu, 2008-07-10 11:12.

So just before the end of May I made to northern Sweden to see what the Riksgransen had to offer.

My good friend Christian Bjork picked me up at the Airport in Kiruna about 24 hours after leaving Vancouver. I found myself in a helicopter 300kms north of the arctic circle and it certainly looked like tundra up there! His buddy Jimmy Halvardsson a local guide had arranged the heli to take us to the triangle run and was prepared with a rope and anchor to get passed the cornice. (yes I know it looks like you should just huck but the crust on top of the snow made that a terrible idea;-))

Mt Rainier - Summer ski mission!

Submitted by Pat Mulrooney on Wed, 2008-07-02 08:36.

Tobin on the Emmons

Rainier has been one of those mountains that's eluded me over the past few spring summer volcano seasons. It was always weather or altitude or something that we couldnt control that would shut us down. This week-end however it would happen! I watched the weather all week before hand and decided on Thursday it would be a go. Danielle, Jordin and Tobin were keen to get up there as well as none of them had ever summited either. So after an exciting traffic bout with the border and I-5, 10 hours later we found ourselves at the White River trailhead. Realizing this would probably be a race from the summit Tobin prepared his secret wax formula.

The Gnardelhorn

Submitted by Bougie on Thu, 2008-06-26 05:53.

Route guide and description.

Take hwy north until you see the sign to exit here. Proceed down road until you reach a fork in the road. Take the right path (indicated by its lesser-traveled nature). Proceed until your vehicular means will take you no further. Park here. Ascend through forests and all forms that wish to impede your mortal progress until reaching the alpine. From here you will have your first glimpse of the task at hand. Proceed onwards passing by the hills of Inhibition. Soon you will see clutter creek. Cross this obstacle at the first opportune moment (Note: the sooner you by-pass this obstacle the better off you will be.) Loosing your perception of impossibility will allow you passage through the crux section of your chosen path. Boldly continue upwards rejoicing in the past but looking at the future. Upon reaching the summit ridge continue upwards until climaxing at the pinnacle of your wildest dreams. You may wish to go further, but you should click in here. The descent route will make itself apparent by its abundance of steepness, deepness and all around epicness. Enjoy your Gnardelhorn.
